Over the last few months, I have taken steps to increase my learning potential in the field of nutrition. For me understanding ‘why’ is what gets me up in the morning. I’ve always had an inquisitive mind and if I don’t understand something, then I find a way to educate myself.
Not wanting to spend time and effort on lengthy courses that 90% of the course content I couldn’t relate to, I decided that the way forward (for me personally) was to attend bespoke courses and seminars where I could get the most out in the shortest amount of time.
I’ve been very lucky to seek out those people in the industry that I hold in very high regard. There are some key people in the industry that are challenging (and in fact changing) the perception of what the general public understand about nutrition. Unfortunately, due to the mis-information that gets put out by organisations and the media on an almost daily basis, there is no wonder why the general public are left confused.
One such person is Martin MacDonald, a clinical sports nutritionist based in Loughborough. Way back in 2011, his first nutritional seminar was the first proper seminar I ever attended and I was so awe-inspired that it lit a flame inside of me to continue what I do today.

His portfolio is massive frankly, and his time is spent working with elite athletes, celebrities and footballers as well as running the UK’s Leading Consultancy for Nutrition Advice.
So last year, Martin got to talking about a mentorship programme that he wanted to run over a weekend, so you can imagine I wanted in. So after applying and then being accepted onto the programme, I was beside myself with excitement.
The programme that Martin and his team put together was extremely well thought out. Its taken me a few days just to absorb the weekends content and not only did the content cover a huge amount of nutritional topics but some other very useful bits were added in as well. These were not necessarily nutrition driven but they covered areas like marketing and how to work with clients. So in essence, this is what we covered:

– Biochemical and Hormonal Effects of Macronutrients
– The Science behind contemporary diets
– Know your client
Day 2 (The practical bits)
– Dietary Calculations for Athletes and General Population
– Dietary Planning & Determinants of Compliance
– Food Diary Analysis
– Marketing Yourself
I can honestly say that if you are looking for something very similar, then you can’t go wrong at all. My expectations about the programme were blown away by the first break. Martins propensity to deliver sometimes tough subjects in an easy to understand manner is what draws me back time and time again. I’d also like to take the opportunity to thank his team too, they worked extremely hard over the course of the weekend to make sure that each attendee got the most out of the learning experience.
Sarah Duffield – Senior Health and Performance Nutritionist at Mac-Nutrition. This girl without a doubt has her head screwed on when it comes to nutrition. I found the presentation she gave about ‘know you client’, insightful least because of the psychology involved when working with someone.
Katherine McFarthing – Katherine provided a talk on marketing and how to use it to promote you business, she was also there to make sure that everything went smoothly as well as making sure we were sufficiently fueled for the weekend.
So in terms of the snacks and lunch provided, high class nutrition!, but would you expect anything else?
So to sum up the weekend, I can honestly say that this is probably one of the best nutritional seminars I have ever attended and for anyone thinking about it, I can highly recommend approaching mac-nutrition for further information.
